¿Qué es un baño de sonido y sus beneficios?


En Shanti-Som dimos la bienvenida a la entrenadora de relajación con sonido, Christine Heckel, para que facilitara una experiencia de baño de sonido cósmico. Los sonidos relajantes de un gong y 12 cuencos cantores de metal llenaron el aire y todos los invitados salieron evidentemente relajados, con un aura de humilde calma a su alrededor. Decidimos investigar qué es exactamente un baño de sonido y los beneficios para nuestro bienestar y salud.

¿Qué es un baño de sonido?

Se trata básicamente de una experiencia terapéutica y meditativa en la que te «bañas» en los sonidos y vibraciones producidos por diferentes instrumentos como gongs, diapasones y cuencos de cristal. A través de estos sonidos y vibraciones, tu mente entra en un estado meditativo y relajado. Esto provoca la curación a nivel mental, emocional y físico.

Durante un baño de sonido, el estado de las ondas cerebrales se altera desde el estado normal de vigilia (beta) hasta el estado de relajación (alfa), el estado de ensoñación (theta) e incluso el estado de restauración (delta). A medida que la mente y el cuerpo se relajan, el ritmo cardíaco y la presión arterial disminuyen y nuestra respiración se vuelve más profunda.  Es en este estado donde puede producirse una curación profunda.

Por tanto, un baño de sonido no sólo reduce el estrés y la ansiedad al inducir un estado de relajación, sino que también tiene beneficios fisiológicos. Entre ellos están la reducción del dolor, un mejor sueño, la eliminación de toxinas y el fortalecimiento del sistema inmunitario.

Beneficios de un baño de sonido

Se ha demostrado que el sonido tiene efectos curativos tanto en la mente como en el cuerpo. Una sesión de baño de sonido puede provocar una reducción de los niveles de ansiedad, tensión y tristeza, así como una disminución del dolor. La investigación sobre este tema es limitada, pero ha habido estudios que indican que un baño de sonido puede mejorar tu estado de ánimo y liberar la tensión del cuerpo, entre otras cosas.

Puede parecer que los baños de sonido son otra moda de la Nueva Era, pero la terapia de sonido es tan antigua como el tiempo, ya que se remonta a más de 40.000 años. Los antiguos griegos utilizaban flautas y liras para tratar la digestión y la salud mental, los tibetanos usaron cuencos cantores durante más de 2.000 años con fines de meditación, y las tribus aborígenes australianas tocaban el didgeridoo para curar a los enfermos.

Beneficios para la salud mental

Los baños de sonido pueden ayudar a tratar las enfermedades mentales, como la depresión y la ansiedad.

Un estudio realizado en 2016 con 62 adultos midió sus sentimientos antes de un baño de sonido, y de nuevo después de una sesión de meditación que incluía un baño de sonido. Los investigadores descubrieron que la tensión, la ansiedad y los estados de ánimo negativos disminuían significativamente después de la terapia.

En un estudio realizado en 2018 con 60 participantes se pidió a 30 de ellos que escucharan la música de los cuencos tibetanos antes de someterse a una intervención quirúrgica y a los otros 30 se les dio unos auriculares sin música.

El análisis descubrió que la frecuencia cardíaca y otras constantes vitales que indican ansiedad mejoraron en los que recibieron los auriculares con música.

Reducción del dolor físico

A los participantes del estudio de 2016 mencionado anteriormente también se les preguntó si sentían dolor, y que clasificaran su dolor en una escala de 1 a 5 si lo sentían.

Antes de un baño de sonido, estos participantes en el estudio tendían a clasificar su dolor más alto que después. Sin embargo, se necesita más investigación para confirmar si esta tendencia a la reducción del dolor alcanzaría significación clínica.

En la revisión de 2020, los síntomas físicos como la presión arterial y la frecuencia cardíaca también experimentaron una mejora. Sin embargo, la revisión concluyó que se necesita más investigación para afirmar definitivamente que el baño de sonido tiene estos efectos en la mayoría de las personas.

Qué esperar durante un baño de sonido

La mayoría de los programas de baños de sonido duran entre 45 y 60 minutos. Durante una sesión de baño de sonido con un practicante, te tumbas en una esterilla de yoga con un cómodo cojín bajo la cabeza. El practicante te pide que te concentres en tu respiración durante unos minutos para relajarte y luego utiliza diferentes instrumentos, como cuencos curativos, diapasones y gongs, para producir diferentes sonidos y vibraciones.

Los sonidos inundan tu mente y tu cuerpo y te llevan a un estado de conciencia más profundo, como durante la meditación. En realidad, te desconectas de los estímulos externos y entras en un estado de paz y armonía interior.

A lo largo de las sesiones, las personas experimentan una serie de sensaciones físicas y mentales. Lo más habitual es que caigan en un profundo estado de relajación. Pero los participantes también han tenido momentos creativos de «¡ajá!», han derramado lágrimas e incluso han dormido. Otros pueden sentir muy poco.

¿Puedes hacer un baño de sonido en casa?

Ciertamente, puedes hacer tu sesión de baño de sonido en casa si asistir a una sesión de grupo no te resulta práctico. Hay mucha música de baño de sonido disponible en Internet.

Una vez que hayas seleccionado la música grabada o los sonidos de la sesión que quieras reproducir, túmbate cómodamente. Luego, cierra los ojos y respira profundamente. Concéntrate en tu respiración y relájate, y luego concéntrate en los sonidos que te rodean. Escucha y concéntrate en la diferencia que se crea cuando el sonido se desvanece.

Sigue experimentando los sonidos y deja que te anclen al presente.  No juzgues ningún sonido, sólo obsérvalo. Si sientes pánico o inquietud, no reacciones, sólo reconoce la emoción. Haz esto durante el resto de la grabación mientras tomas conciencia del espacio que te rodea.

Una vez terminada la grabación, quédate en silencio durante uno o dos minutos, y luego abre lentamente los ojos. Observa cómo ha cambiado tu conciencia.

Escuchar grabaciones en casa es una forma estupenda de mejorar tu práctica de meditación y de ralentizarte y relajarte. Sin embargo, no hay nada como estar en la misma sala con los instrumentos y el practicante respondiendo al individuo o al grupo.

Conclusión

Un baño de sonido es una práctica meditativa que la mayoría de la gente puede probar con seguridad. Un baño de sonido puede ser más fácil que otras prácticas meditativas porque no requiere mucha disciplina ni paciencia para aprender a hacerlo: todo lo que tienes que hacer es escuchar.

Ten en cuenta que los baños de sonido no sustituyen a la medicación ni a la terapia con un profesional de la salud mental autorizado para tratar la ansiedad o la depresión. Pero dado que la relajación es el principal subproducto de esta práctica, puede merecer la pena probarla como forma de recarga.
