We’re lucky to be surrounded by lots of fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables here in Spain, but which ones are the super detoxifying foods and how can we incorporate them into our diet?
Beetroot – Beets are packed with vitamins B3, B6 and C, as well as being a valuable source of iron, magnesium, zinc and calcium, which all help with the natural cleansing process of the body. The high amount of fibre in beetroot helps the body to eliminate toxins and waste. The best kind for detoxing is natural, un-pickled beets.
Flaxseeds – These little seeds help to ensure that toxins are eliminated properly by binding and flushing them from the intestinal tract. Also a source of Omega 3 oils, a few spoonfuls of ground flaxseeds every day will help immensely with the detox process.
Lemon – One of the best fruits to use in a detox diet, it offers a number of benefits. Firstly, lemons help to convert toxins into a water-soluble form that can easily be excreted from the body. Secondly, by drinking lemon in warm water first thing in the morning it will help to balance out the acidity in the foods we have consumed. You could even try grinding up your flaxseeds and adding them to your morning lemon drink.
Garlic – This super-food is essential to any detox diet and is ranked as one of the most important foodstuffs available. It helps to cleanse and thin the blood, reduces fats and lowers blood pressure. Garlic is so powerful it even helps with clearing nicotine from the body and can be easily incorporated into your everyday diet.
Apples – Rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals, apples are a great detox food and help toxins and waste to move more quickly through the intestinal tract. Eating apples also helps clear and prevent plaque build-up in the blood vessels. We recommend organic apples, as some supermarket brands have been shown to contain higher levels of pesticide residues.
2 Raw Beetroots
1 Stick of Celery
½ Small Pineapple
Place all prepared ingredients into a blender or food processor and whiz until smooth.
Adjust to preferred consistency with mineral water if required.
Pour into a glass and serve.
The stunning colour of the beetroot makes this a fantastic juice to look at and it tastes refreshing. Beetroots are a well-known tonic and are also known for their effectiveness in helping to reduce bad LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Keeping up with the appealing colour of this juice, the addition of flavoursome strawberries adds a mega dose of vitamin C − just five strawberries can give you your recommended daily allowance of this important vitamin.
Strawberries also contain the lesser-known vitamin K, necessary for effective blood clotting. The addition of celery boosts the electrolyte balance of the body with a helping of organic sodium. These powerful ingredients blend perfectly with the juicy sweetness of nutritious pineapple.
